Terraform Associate 004 #1 Exam Introduction: The 004 Revision, Domain Structure, and Study Strategy

4 min read

Terraform Associate is the official Terraform certification run by HashiCorp, and the most widely recognized name in the job market for proving IaC skills. On January 8, 2026, the exam was revised from 003 to 004, which opened a gap between the 003-era study materials piled up on the internet and the current exam. This series covers the 004 scope in nine parts and closes with a 50-question practice exam. If you have finished the Terraform basics, practice, and operations track, this series is less “learning something new” and more “realigning what you know into the language of the exam” — and the mapping table for that is what we build in this part.

Duration60 minutes
Fee70.50 USD

The fee and detailed policies can change, so verify them on the official page when you register. Sixty minutes is not much for the number of questions, so there is no room to dwell on a single one; flag anything you cannot answer immediately and move on — time management matters. Since this is an online proctored exam, finish the environment checks — ID, a quiet room, webcam requirements — by the day before you sit it.

From 003 to 004: what changed #

The skeleton of the previous scope (IaC concepts, workflow, state, modules, writing configuration) remains, and the following was added or strengthened.

  1. Ephemeral values and write-only arguments: the Terraform 1.10–1.11 features that keep secrets out of plan and state are now officially in scope. This is exactly what we practiced in Practice #6.
  2. depends_on and lifecycle: explicit dependencies and lifecycle controls like create_before_destroy carry more weight.
  3. Custom conditions: on top of variable validation, precondition and postcondition are now included. Our track only touched these lightly, so #7 fills the gap.
  4. Expanded HCP Terraform: workspace and project structure, variable sets, policy enforcement, and drift detection — the managed platform now takes up a wider slice of the exam. #9 covers it in depth.

Overall, the weight has shifted from “do you know the syntax” toward “do you know the mechanisms that keep operations safe”.

Series structure and track mapping #

Here is a single table showing which exam objectives each part of this series covers and which parts of the track it builds on. Use it as a map for finding where to go back to when you need review.

Study strategy #

  • If you finished the track: read from #2 in order to learn the way the exam phrases things, and concentrate your time on the unfamiliar items (custom conditions in #7, HCP in #9). Scoring 70% or higher on the #10 practice exam is a reasonable signal that you are ready to register.
  • If you are preparing for the exam without the track: use this series to cover the scope, but for concepts your hands do not remember, go down to the mapped track part and add hands-on practice. People say the Associate is passable without hands-on work, but concepts you have actually touched and concepts you have merely memorized part ways in front of a trick option.
  • Either way: go through the official study guide and the sample questions at least once. It is the fastest way to get used to how the exam talks — which command does what, which file holds what.

Recap #

What we covered in this post:

  • Terraform Associate has been on the 004 revision since 2026-01-08: a 60-minute online proctored exam based on Terraform 1.12
  • The additions in 004 are ephemeral and write-only, depends_on and lifecycle, custom conditions, and expanded HCP Terraform
  • This series consists of nine parts of scope coverage plus a 50-question practice exam, with each part mapped to the corresponding part of the Terraform track
  • Time management (flag and move on when stuck) and checking your exam environment are the practical essentials

In the next post (#2 IaC Concepts and Terraform’s Purpose), we enter the first exam area. It is the territory of definition questions — easy to underestimate precisely because it looks easy.
